What you should know before crochet workshops

You should know how to make a crochet chain. The chain can be as long or short as you wish.

Check out YouTube for basic crochet lessons. The tools you need for lace-making are crochet hooks made of steel for fine threads.

Irish crochet lace making normally uses 1.75mm, 1.50mm, 1.25mm, 1.0mm, .90mm, .75mm and smaller.

An investment in a set of crochet hooks made of steel is well worth your while! The top crochet hook makers for lace making?

  • Tulip of Japan
  • Clover
  • Susan Bates

AVOID Boyle hooks because the tip of the hook is rounded and not easy to insert into fine stitches.

Where to Buy?

Our instructors will have some hooks for sale during the workshops. You might receive a small kit to include a crochet hook.

Amazon, Etsy, eBay are online crochet hook providers. Check your local craft stores.

Threads

The best threads to use in Modern crochet lace is a #10 fine and smooth Sapfir threads. These are provided by Ms. Julia Tushnicka of Ukraine.

Irish Crochet and Clones (Clo-ness) Lace work up nicely with #10, #20, #30, #50 and smaller. Lizbeth thread is a favorite choice of Maire (My-rah) Treanor in those sizes. Beginners should work with #10 for motifs and #20 for netting.
